This project is part of a larger project involving the upgrading of a four unit Art Deco apartment block in Dulwich Hill, Sydney. The kitchen component of the first floor southern unit serves as both the focal point and visual inside/outside connector to the exterior.

The kitchens position in the overall plan forms a recess to the units circulation at the juncture between interior space and exterior space. In plan it is a point of stoppage, this notion is expressed almost literally through the compressed cement sheet flooring that has replaced the dressed timber floor boards that appears elsewhere. This notional anchorage in plan is contradicted in elevation by the dynamic colours together with clever positioning of materials, evoking a sense of horizontal movement that connects the interior spaces of this two bedroom second storey unit to the outside garden and landscape. It is through the contradiction that this project gains life.
